Despite protests by animal rights activists the Hindu festival in Nepal went on. In 2009, some 200,000 animals died, according to reports.
Some 5,000 buffalo have been slaughtered in Nepal during what is thought to be the largest animal ritual ceremony in the world.
The animals are killed as part of the Hindu Gadhimai festival, reports Al Jazeera.
As well as buffalo, rats, birds, chicken, goats and pigs are also sacrificed.
The event takes place every five years and during the same festival in 2009, some 200,000 animals were slaughtered.
It is thought around 100,000 animals will die during this year’s event, reports The Independent.
