BP CEO gets 25% pay rise while profits drop

banksBP Chief Executive Bob Dudley was given a 25 percent rise in total pay and bonuses in 2014 despite a drop in profits at the oil major, according to the annual report.

Dudley’s remuneration rose from $10.17 million in 2013 to $12.74 million last year, according to BP’s annual report released Tuesday. He also received $9.8 million in share awards. In January the company cuts its capital spending program and imposed a salary freeze, weeks after axing hundreds of jobs in Scotland and thousands more globally as a result of falling oil prices and profits. BP has frozen the pay of its 84,000 workforce around the world after a nearly 50 percent fall in crude prices since last summer.

BP’s chief will receive a deferred bonus package of $3.4 million. There was no bonus in 2013 as BP was facing aftermath of the disastrous spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Dudley’s base salary increased only by 3 percent to $1.8 million. His annual bonus fell to $1million last year from $2.3 million in 2013; this was partly due to his decision to defer $1million for three years. The chief executive will see no salary increase in 2015 in line with the company’s pay freeze and spending cuts.

In February BP’s workers went out on strike in the UK, seeking tighter regulations to prevent worker fatigue, a reduction of non-union contract workers, and wage increases for its members.

Shareholders have criticized BP for its executive pay packages. Dudley’s pay for 2013, which tripled over 2012, has been criticized by some shareholders as well. Nevertheless, it was approved by the majority of the shareholders, with the company arguing it can retain top talent only by paying its executives competitive salaries.

400 men cut their testicles off believing it would help them meet God

NEW DELHI, Feb 27, 2015: An Indian spiritual guru-turned- movie-star allegedly convinced up to 400 men to castrate themselves because it would bring them closer to God.

The procedures are thought to have taken place around the year 2000.

However, victims are only coming forward after overcoming initial fears of speaking out against the widely-beloved Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who has around 40 to 50 million followers worldwide, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Known as “the guru in bling” and worth an estimated US$40 million (RM140 million), Gurmeet reportedly urged his followers that having their testicles removed would allow them to meet God and speak with Him directly.

Witnesses of the castrations say they were conducted at a hospital owned by Gurmeet’s spiritual organisation, the Sydney Morning Herald added.

Several witnesses have agreed to testify in court, possibly putting an end to his history of avoiding conviction.

UK begins testing driverless cars with ambitions for world leadership in industry

Britain has begun testing its own driverless cars, as the government has agreed to a “light touch, non-regulatory approach” to testing the vehicles on public roads, following a six-month review of the country’s technical adaptability to driverless tech.

The UK government has channeled £19 million ($29 million) into four pilot programs across the country, it was revealed Wednesday.

A government review also pointed out that by 2030, Britain expects to become a leader in the field. Not only that – by then you’ll also be able to sit back, surf the net and completely disregard the fact that you’re on a perilous journey with hundreds of other automated vehicles around you.

High-tech Japanese hotel to employ human-like robot staff

by Mariella Moon

Going to Japan? Here’s a bit of advice: if you’re absolutely terrified of eerie human-like robots, think very hard before visiting Nagasaki prefecture’s Henn-na Hotel that’s slated to open its doors in July. Why? Because the high-tech hotel will employ 10 robots, three of which are multilingual gynoids that look like they were shipped straight from Uncanny Valley. Kokoro, the robots’ manufacturer, calls them “actroids,” and yes, you’ve seen usfeature them in the past. Thankfully, they’re stuck behind the check-in counter as receptionists, so you can just get that part done as fast as possible. Or, you can try to flirt for a room upgrade if that’s your thing, since they can apparently establish eye contact and respond to body language.

Separation of the classes – You shall not pass! 1-meter-high ‘anti-burglar’ wall raises eyebrows in French town

A mayor of a northern French town has taken a rather bizarre measure against burglars by erecting an “impassable” stone wall across one of its streets. The 1-meter tall structure caused puzzled locals to sign a petition against the drastic action.

The construction in the northern French commune of Hénin-Beaumont in the Pas-de-Calais department basically just blocks traffic. It was introduced by the town’s mayor Steeve Briois who belongs to the National Front party, La Voix du Nord newspaper reported on Wednesday.

“It is simple urban planning that has been approved by 70–80 percent of the population in the neighborhood,” the town council stated, as cited by Le Figaro newspaper.

New technique fights aging, extends life of cultured human cells

The high vulnerability of cultured adult stem cells has posed a big problem for microbiological research. But a new technique, developed by Stanford scientists, can extend the life of cultured cells and offer clues to solving diseases and prolonging life.

The technique can quickly increase the length of human telomeres, the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes. As a result, the treated cells behave as if they are much younger and multiply with abandon in the laboratory dish – rather than stagnating and dying. Normally, telomeres shorten with each cell division, and this is the reason a cell eventually dies.

Now we have found a way to lengthen human telomeres by as much as 1,000 nucleotides, turning back the internal clock in these cells by the equivalent of many years of human life,”said Helen Blau, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology at Sanford, in a statement. “This greatly increases the number of cells available for studies such as drug testing and disease modeling.”

Internet will disappear ~ Google Guru Predicts

Top Google executive predicts end of the internet

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Google guru Eric Schmidt gave an answer regarding the evolution of the web. “I will answer very simply that the internet will disappear,” Schmidt said on Thursday.

“There will be so many IP addresses, … so many devices, sensors, things that you are wearing, things that you are interacting with that you won’t even sense it, it will be part of your presence all the time,” heexplained. “Imagine you walk into a room, and the room is dynamic. And with your permission and all of that, you are interacting with the things going on in the room.”

“A highly personalized, highly interactive and very, very interesting world emerges,” Schmidt concluded.

Windows 10 upgrade free for owners of Windows 7 and 8.1

Microsoft Previews Windows 10, Unveils New Internet Browser

By Dina Bass

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), seeking to use the next version of its Windows software to win back consumers and keep business customers happy, gave a detailed look at the new operating system and took the wraps off a revamped Web browser.

At an event Wednesday to preview Windows 10, the new iteration of its flagship personal-computer software, Microsoft showed the browser that will succeed Internet Explorer, code-named Project Spartan. The update to Windows, coming later this year, will also bring Cortana, the voice-activated digital assistant, to PC desktops, and will have touch-enabled Office applications such as Word and Excel built-in for smartphones and tablets.

Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella, who took the helm almost a year ago, is trying to resuscitate Windows even as mobile computing continues to surge, PC demand sputters, and Microsoft focuses on versions of its Office applications for rival software platforms. He’s also tasked with overhauling the product little more than two years after the last update — Windows 8 — failed to jump-start consumer demand while alienating corporate customers.

“A lot of this is really about making a sharper message for consumer,” said Wes Miller, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft. “How do you appease the enterprise while making it a great tablet operating system and not one thing layered on top of another thing?”

Richest 1% to own more than rest of world, Oxfam says

The wealthiest 1% will soon own more than the rest of the world’s population, according to a study by anti-poverty charity Oxfam.

The charity’s research shows that the share of the world’s wealth owned by the richest 1% increased from 44% in 2009 to 48% last year.

On current trends, Oxfam says it expects the wealthiest 1% to own more than 50% of the world’s wealth by 2016.

The research coincides with the start of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The annual gathering attracts top political and business leaders from around the world.

Oxfam’s executive director Winnie Byanyima, who will co-chair the Davos event, said she would use the charity’s high-profile role at the forum to demand urgent action to narrow the gap between rich and poor.

In a statement ahead of the gathering, Ms Byanyima said the scale of global inequality was “simply staggering”.

“It is time our leaders took on the powerful vested interests that stand in the way of a fairer and more prosperous world.

“Business as usual for the elite isn’t a cost-free option – failure to tackle inequality will set the fight against poverty back decades. The poor are hurt twice by rising inequality – they get a smaller share of the economic pie and because extreme inequality hurts growth, there is less pie to be shared around,” she added.

‘Muslims don’t believe in freedom of speech’ – radical cleric Chaudry

Radical British preacher Anjem Choudary has come under heavy criticism for controversial remarks regarding Wednesday’s terrorist attack in Paris.

London based Choudary wrote a letter, published by US news outlet USA today, claiming that Muslims“did not believe in the concept of freedom of expression,” and that the Sharia (Islamic law) was more important than the legal systems of liberal democracies.

“Contrary to popular misconception, Islam does not mean peace but rather means submission to the commands of Allah alone. Therefore, Muslims do not believe in the concept of freedom of expression, as their speech and actions are determined by divine revelation and not based on people’s desires,” he wrote.

“Although Muslims may not agree about the idea of freedom of expression, even non-Muslims who espouse it say it comes with responsibilities. In an increasingly unstable and insecure world, the potential consequences of insulting the Messenger Muhammad are known to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.”

While You Were Getting Worked Up Over Oil Prices, This Just Happened to Solar

By Tom Randall

Every time fossil fuels get cheaper, people lose interest in solar deployment. That may be about to change.

After years of struggling against cheap natural gas prices and variable subsidies, solar electricity is on track to be as cheap or cheaper than average electricity-bill prices in 47 U.S. states — in 2016, according to a Deutsche Bank report published this week. That’s assuming the U.S. maintains its 30 percent tax credit on system costs, which is set to expire that same year.

Even if the tax credit drops to 10 percent, solar will soon reach price parity with conventional electricity in well over half the nation: 36 states. Gone are the days when solar panels were an exotic plaything of Earth-loving rich people. Solar is becoming mainstream, and prices will continue to drop as the technology improves and financing becomes more affordable, according to the report.

Re-fuel Every 100 Years With the New Thorium Car

By: Amanda Froelich

True Activist.

If you haven’t yet been amazed by the hybrid car that runs on air or the water-powered engine, this vehicle is sure to make you think twice about the alternative forms of transportation which will one day rule the road.

The new Thorium car, created by a company called Laser Power Systems, is completely emission-free, turbine-free, and is electricity generated. It’s one of the new sustainable-powered engines to show just how unnecessary modern day propulsion engines are and also offer an exciting alternative.

Fueled by nuclear thorium lasers, this engine only needs 8 grams of fuels every 100 years. Charles Stevens, the CEO and chairman of the Connecticut-based company, claims that one gram of thorium yields the energy of 7,500 gallons of gasoline.  Harnessed by heating the energy from an external source, the energy becomes so dense the molecules produce heat. A vehicle that needs refilling once a lifetime.

It seems many countries and military agencies have been experimenting with this type of energy to power vehicles for a number of years. And now with designs to create a car for the public, those who find their gasoline budget a sensitive topic may find relief in this model.
